Five students from MSU Department of Art were selected to be
included in the publication Best of College & High
School Photography 2014. The
students whose images will be included are Sydney Armer, Zach Boozer, Jackson
Donald, Cody McCain and Carrie Shannon. 34th Annual College &
High School Photography Contest, co-sponsored by Nikon. Over 16,600 photographs
were entered from the U.S., Canada and around the world. The judges included Nell
Campbell, The Photographer’s Forum editor; Christopher Broughton, Brooks
Institute; Ann Cutting, Art Center College of Design; and William Snyder,
Rochester Institute of Technology.
“The lush green of the
landscape and the bend of the tree make this image by Sydney Armer inviting for the viewer.” States Professor Marita
Gootee who is the Area Coordinator of the Photography Concentration in the
Department of Art at Mississippi State University. “Sydney is at the very
beginning of her career and I know she will be very successful.”
“The image by Zach Boozer
is study of light, lines and a simple pallet.” States Professor Marita Gootee.
“Zack is a natural in photography. His eye is rich and true. There is a bright
future for Zach as a photographer.”
“The self-portrait
photograph created by Jackson Donald utilizes repetition to help move the
viewer’s eye around the interior space to notice the framed photographs.
Jackon’s reflection in the mirror is also framed like a photograph on the wall
embedding him into the depicted domestic setting.” States Assistant Professor
Dominic Lippillo. “Jackson shows promise as a photographer and I am excited to
see the direction his work leads him.”
“This diptych photograph by
Cody McCain creates a dialogue about memory and past experiences. The tonality
of his black and white imagery allows the viewer to feel the textures of the
mud and the holes of the shoes with his or her eyes.” States Assistant
Professor Dominic Lippillo. “Cody is young to photography but shows an
excitement for learning and a passion for the medium.”
Carrie Shannon graduated in
the Fall 2013. She earned BFA in Fine Art in the photography concentration. “The
piano sits on the diagonal as if about to fall through the floor in an
abandoned building. There is a stillness that I find haunting.” Says Professor
Gootee. “Carrie is an excellent photographer and she should pursue this love of
space with her camera. I see this as just the beginning of an exciting career
as a photographer.”
